Xenia Bapasola

The world is filled with small enchantments and spaces of peace. Xenia focuses on the way the world tilts its head towards the sky and reaches upwards, building itself towards the clouds. Her study of frequently-accessed spaces allows her to construct skyward-sanctuaries of hope and safety, this fighting for the best of our world and ourselves.

Life is a balance between beauty and pain. It is the misfortune of humanity to experience deep pain, loss, death, violence, and fear. However, it is pain that deepens Xenia’s commitment to beauty, just as brutality calls to crescendo the fight for peace. Her call to beauty is a response to pain.

Similar to the settings depicted in her paintings, her artwork is not intended for private eyes and contemplation only. Rather, art is for all to partake in and enjoy and people should not feel alienated from it. Accessibility is key to the artist to destroy the notion of art being only for the intellectual, the rich, and the elite. To her, art should be welcoming, approachable, and warm like an old friend or sunlight. It is for everyone to look at, to find peace in, to play with, to make, and to enjoy in any ways they wish to. Art is for everyone and that is an opinion Xenia will spend her life turning into fact.

At the Precipice.

Medium: Acrylic on Canvas

Size: 40 x 80cm

At the edge of our dreams, we tremble. We are like children afraid to embrace them in fear of breaking the illusion. We tip-toe through paradise isolated and haunted by the fear of awakening the nightmare. It takes strength to embrace joy. It takes the ordeal to understand that we are capable of surviving through that ordeal. It is from our pain that our joy is made obtainable. Without it, we are like children tip toeing through paradise, afraid of the nightmare.

Vessel of Paradise

Medium: Acrylic on canvas

Size: 100 x 120cm

A broken ship can serve as an ideal vessel of paradise. We first need to let go of our understanding of a ship and surrender to its brokenness. After all, if it is meant to be a vessel for paradise, it cannot remain a ship. It has to be ‘broken’ in order to fulfil the conditions of the paradise it must emulate. To break may also be to break free.

We Are No longer in the
Desert My Dear

Medium: Acrylic on Canvas

Size: 60 x 80cm

We’re no longer in the desert, my dear. Why are you pulling at your ship? What are you trying to escape? You’ve reached the shores of paradise, Eden lies before your feet, yet, you are hoarding water from the river, filling wall to wall with bottles, watching them in the night, in sleeplessness, while anxious, sweating and parched. Why do you still feel the scorpions scurry about your feet, despite them having disbanded years ago?
Resilient little creature, you know how to survive but forgot how to live.
Even though you are no longer in the desert my dear, why do you cling to it?

Meteor Shower at Hope Springs

Medium : Acrylic and acrylic medium

Size : 60 x 90cm

The sea surrenders to the sky as it lights itself on fire tonight. the dark is happy to be sequestered by the light. It is more important to know when to submit than to know when to fight.

Medium: Acrylic on Canvas

Size : 60 x 120cm

If it slips from my fingertips, I can scour my fingerprints to find it again. I want to sit, understand and watch every minute, every moment and very breath, so I can recreate it in my dreams and fashion it from my hands, like a spider’s web upon the streetlamps. It will be mine to hold and return to. It will be mine to let go of.
I will not fear losing it, but instead blissfully allow it to float away like clouds on the wind, as change seeps through the cracks of kintsugi.
